Easy Cycling Along the Blue Danube

Enjoy a cycling experience along the river Danube, through various districts of Upper and Lower Austria as you finally reach the famous town of Vienna. Ride through the picturesque landscapes of Machland, Strudengau and the Wachau Valley. This trip covers reasonable distances and due to its easy pace is ideal for first-timers, the young, the young hearted and even families with young children as you cycle along a path which is mostly flat and even downhill.

Day 1 : Arrive in Passau, Germany

Arrive in Passau and explore the "New Centre” of Passau, the town of three rivers.

Day 2 : Scharding/Passau - Schlögen Bend Area; Cycle (Approx. 40-55 km)

Start riding along the river into Passau. You can opt for a guided trip of the town or a visit to the cathedral. Continue along the Danube, pass through Obernzell to arrive at Engelhartszell. Pass through the nature reserve of Donauleiten to reach the Schlögen Bend in the north. A ferry ride to the other side of the river takes you to your hotel.

Day 3 : Danube Bend Area - Linz; Cycle (Approx. 50 km)

Cycle through the green Eferdinger basin via the market towns of Aschach, Ottensheim and Wilhering, all the way to Linz. The historical Old Town of Linz has many pubs and eateries. Other highlights include the magnificent views from Pöstlingberg mountain and a walk through the Donaulände park.

Day 4 : Linz - Grein Area; (Approx. 55 km)

Today take a short day trip away from the course of the Danube to St. Florian and Enns. You can visit the town square and the Lauriacum museum. Later, continue to ride to the beautiful town of Grein where you may either visit the oldest municipal theatre or explore the Greinburg castle.

Day 5 : Grein Area - Wachau; Cycle (Approx. 55 km)

This part of the Danube that you will cycle along today, the Strudengau, was once feared by sailors who used to fight against the Danube currents. In Maria Taferl, high above the Danube, you will find the magnificent church that attracts thousands of pilgrims every year.

Day 6 : Wachau - Krems/Tulln; Cycle (Approx. 40-60 km)

On this route, a must-stop in Melk is the beautiful Stift Melk monastery that overlooks the Danube. Ride along the picturesque Wachau region filled with orchards and vineyards. Finish your journey in the 1,000-year old town of Krems or in Tulln. Today there is a special wine tasting session organised for you.

Day 7 : Krems/Tulln - Vienna; Cycle (Approx. 45-65 km)

A relaxed trip to the metropolis of Vienna, a part of which is covered by train. After checking in at your hotel, you are free to explore Vienna. A visit to the Parade shopping street or to St Stephen’s Cathedral is recommended.

Day 8 : Departure from Vienna

Your cycling trip ends today but your vacation doesn't have to. You can extend your stay in Vienna or let us add more activities for the rest of your trip.
