Burgundy Easy Cycling Trip
Discover Burgundy's wonderful countryside where grapes have been a means for earnings ever since Roman times. As you cycle along this route, you will get to see beautiful villages, dense oak forests, and the renowned vineyards of Pommard, Aloxe-Corton and Meursault. Taste, compare and fill your saddlebags with some bottles of exquisite white or red wine. The fairytale castles, ancient cloisters, colourful rooftops and well-preserved architecture of Beaune are bound to take you to a very different world!
If you arrive early, you can visit the ruins of Chateau Saint-Romain for a view of the Saint-Romain-le-Bas valley. You may even visit 'Tonnerie François Frères' where they make wine barrels to be shipped around the world.
Today will be an easy bike tour in the Côte d'Or, or more precisely, the Côte de Beaune. You will pass ancient manors, vast vineyards and golden cornfields. You stop for a picnic along the way. Later, you discover medieval wine-making communities and then visit lesser-known villages like Chaudenay and Corcelles-les-Arts.
You ride to Beaune, the wine capital of the Côte d'Or for lunch. Then, you take a walk around the city and visit the 15th-century Hôtel-Dieu or 'Hospices de Beaune', a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. You continue through the countryside. The day ends in Aloxe-Corton, a wine village where most wines bear the classification of Grand Cru.
Today you cycle along lanes of the old Burgundian countryside, passing castles, farming villages of 'La Bourgogne' and stopping to taste some interesting 'vins d'appellation'. From the town of Chorey-lès-Beaune, you cycle into the famous Côte-de-Nuits region. En route, you can stop for a break in one of the sleepy farm villages.
You will cycle through the wine-producing area of Côte-de-Nuits, passing villages like Villers-la-Faye, vineyards and deep marble quarries. There are some short, gradual ascents on this trail.
Today's route leads you to the 12th century St. Philibert's church and the 17th-century mansions of Couchey. A visit to the Brochon for its 'vins estimés' and the castle where the late 19th-century poet Stephen Liégeard lived, is highly recommended. Though for the most part you will be cycling along quiet country lanes, some parts of the route will have more traffic.
Your trip ends today after breakfast. You may extend your stay or further customize the rest of your trip.
